Outstanding Newcomer Project Award from NetEase, and The Suffer of Earning it.

I was the Lead Programmer and Technical Artist in this project, which lasted for 3 months. My overall ranking among all ~1000 newcomers this year is No.2.

Unfortunately the newcomer projects are considered classified property of the company so I can’t share exactly what we were doing.

I took the task of building the base structure of the project and made several VFXs after the programming works were done. Showing a few VFX is okay I guess.

Boss & Character ATTACK VFX (Particle System, UV flow)
Ultimate Skill VFX, Stage Complete VFX (Just a simple edge-mask)

Well, as for the process, I do feel a lack of proper design training in the Chinese game industry. The project was generally under poor management as our designers frequently argue with each other, I reason this back to their awful incompetency in Game-Design methodology(Again, it’s not their fault, there’s no school teaching GD particularly in China anyways). In the first weeks, we were continuously asked to do prototyping without any documents, not even a game for benchmarking – and you guessed it, they are not satisfied each time we hand out the prototype, as a result the team became very frustrated.

In the last few weeks, programmers had secretly decided to just not listen to the designers anymore, as they weren’t really making anything more efficient by shouting everyday.

We quickly shifted focus at the last two weeks and OT a lot to make sure the completion. Although the process was certainly sweaty, we made it.
